Approach

In my clinical work, I take an integrative approach to counselling, incorporating elements from several different theoretical orientations in order to work with clients in a multidimensional approach that is individually tailored to meet each client’s needs. If you'd like to learn more, here are some of the approaches that guide my practice.

Person-Centered

This approach is centered around the idea that each individual is capable of fulfilling their own potential. The goal of this non-directive approach is to empower the client to towards their own personal growth and change. You have the control to guide the session, whatever feels right for you - I will follow your lead.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

This is an evidence-based approach that works with one’s thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviours with the goal of reframing and restructuring these thoughts and beliefs to form new perspectives and understandings. When using CBT as a modality to guide therapy, there is a lot of learning, and most importantly - some homework. For most people, therapy is only 50 minutes of their entire week - that's barely 1% of your entire week. While work in sessions can be profound, most of the work actually takes place during the 99% that you are not in session, practicing new skills, techniques and coping mechanisms to manage problem behaviours. CBT has been proven to be effective for improving many emotional challenges, including but not limited to generalized anxiety disorder, depression, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Mindfulness

the state in which one becomes non-judgmentally conscious of and aware of one’s physical, mental, and emotional connection with themselves in the present moment. Living in the present moment. Paying attention to bodily sensations, thoughts, and feelings, noticing and acknowledging them, and allowing them to be. Helps to control your thoughts, rather than be controlled by them.

Art Therapy

This modality of therapy helps with engaging the mind, body and spirit using a range of different materials to to help with expression and communication. This can be a very empowering experience. Not everyone is always comfortable or has the capability to communicate verbally such raw and vulnerable emotions. Art serves as a gateway for those individuals to still be able to process and express themselves without words. No art experience is necessary. Art helps to facilitate self-exploration and healing and just the process of art making can be incredible therapeutic. This can be an effective modality when working with children, those with limited verbal language, individuals with developmental disabilities and the creative minded alike.
